Mohamed Amine Bouguenna, known as Bou, is a 4x Award-winning producer and DJ from Algeria who has made significant waves in the vibrant drum & bass scene. In this exclusive cover story by Ben Hunter, we explore Bou’s journey as a standout graduate of drum & bass’s new generation.

Bou’s passion for drum & bass ignited at the age of 16 through YouTube tutorials and the SoundCloud jump-up community, during a time when jagged, jump-up sounds were redefining the genre. Despite standing one row back from the vanguard of established artists, Bou’s impact was undeniable, shaping the roughshod evolution of drum & bass.

At 25, Bou has achieved tremendous success as a highly successful artist and touring DJ. His remixes of iconic tracks like High Contrast’s « Kiss Kiss Bang Bang » and DJ Fresh’s « Gold Dust » have garnered widespread acclaim. The breakthrough moment for Bou came in 2017 with the release of his hit « Poison, » a stripped-back dancefloor anthem that resonated across the drum & bass spectrum. Supported by industry giants like Noisia and Kings of the Rollers, « Poison » marked the beginning of Bou’s meteoric rise.

Bou’s ability to blur sub-genre divisions became evident with his releases on Souped Up Records, including the 2018 EP « Habibi » featuring Current Value. His strategic use of social media, particularly Instagram, played a pivotal role in expanding his reach, amassing over 90,000 followers. As Bou navigates the ever-changing landscape of drum & bass, he’s embracing a shift towards more melodic and radio-friendly sounds. This transformation is evident in his upcoming collaboration with Example on a single that seamlessly blends a floating pop vocal with a club-ready bassline. Bou’s entrepreneurial spirit is further showcased by the launch of his label, Gossip. With three out of four of his releases already gracing the Beatport top spot, Gossip has become a platform for Bou’s creative decisions and musical vision.

Despite facing industry pressures and the influence of social media, Bou remains steadfast in his commitment to both his art and his growing fanbase. He acknowledges the challenges of pleasing fans while exploring new musical territories but emphasizes the importance of keeping the audience engaged. In his own words, Bou advises, « You can’t just let the wind take you.
